What is High Rise Syndrome?
High Rise Syndrome is the pattern of injuries when cats fall from apartment balconies. In Pune's high-rise neighbourhoods — Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, Baner, Aundh — we see multiple cases every month.
⚠️ The paradox: cats falling from 2–6 floors often sustain MORE injuries than from 7+ floors. Above terminal velocity cats relax and spread impact. Shorter falls can be deadlier.
Common Injuries
- Fractured jaw — the chin hits first
- Pneumothorax — collapsed lung from chest impact. Needs immediate treatment
- Fractured limbs and pelvis
- Internal organ damage — liver, spleen, bladder rupture
- Spinal injuries — paralysis risk
What to Do Immediately
- Stay calm — panic worsens the cat's shock
- Do NOT cradle — possible spinal injury
- Slide cat onto a flat board or box — support whole body
- Keep warm — shock causes temperature drop

⚠️ Never wait and watch. A cat that walks away may still have internal bleeding. Always get a post-fall examination. We have in-house X-ray and ultrasound for immediate diagnosis.
Prevention
Install balcony safety netting — ₹1,500–₹4,000 for a standard 2BHK balcony. This single investment prevents years of trauma.
