Why Neutering Your Rabbit Matters
Uterine adenocarcinoma affects over 80% of unspayed female rabbits by age 5. It is the single most common cause of death in female rabbits.
🏥 At Shivraj Pet Clinic, we perform rabbit neutering using specialised exotic animal gas anaesthesia — one of very few clinics in PCMC qualified to do this safely.
Benefits of Neutering
- Prevents uterine cancer — eliminates the #1 cause of death in females
- Reduces territorial aggression — biting, lunging and spraying decrease significantly
- Longer lifespan — 8–12 years vs 5–6 unneutered
- Better bonding — calmer, more affectionate, easier to litter-train
The Procedure
- Pre-surgery blood test in our in-house lab
- Gas anaesthesia — gentle, monitored throughout
- Surgery: 20–35 minutes
- Recovery monitoring — closely watched
- Same-day discharge with written post-op care instructions
⚠️ Critical: Rabbits must NOT be fasted before surgery. Their digestive system must keep moving. This is a dangerous mistake made at non-exotic clinics.
Best Age to Neuter
Females: 4–6 months. Males: 3.5–5 months. Earlier is always better — cancer risk in females begins at 18 months.
