Noise phobia is a genuine psychological disorder in pets — not stubbornness or disobedience. Thunder, Diwali firecrackers, construction noise, and vehicle backfires all trigger extreme fear responses in dogs and cats. At Shivraj Pet Clinic & Lab, we help pet parents in Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, Baner, and surrounding areas manage noise phobia effectively.
Why Noise Phobia Happens
Dogs and cats have significantly more sensitive hearing than humans. What sounds loud to us is overwhelming to them. Additionally, dogs can sense changes in barometric pressure and static electricity before a storm even begins — meaning their anxiety often starts before the first crack of thunder.
Signs of Noise Phobia
In dogs:
- Trembling, shaking, or panting excessively
- Attempting to hide under furniture or in closets
- Destructive behaviour — scratching at doors, chewing walls, destroying objects
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Inability to settle despite reassurance
- Vocalization — howling, barking, whining
- Attempting to escape — can lead to pets running into traffic
In cats:
- Hiding under beds or in enclosed spaces
- Refusing to eat or drink
- Dilated pupils and flattened ears
- Excessive grooming or grooming-related hair loss
- Eliminating outside the litter box
Management Strategies
Environmental Changes
Create a dedicated safe space — a quiet, dark room away from windows. For dogs, a covered crate with familiar bedding can provide security. Close windows and curtains to muffle noise and block the visual stimuli of lightning.
Behavioural Approaches
Do not punish fearful behaviour — this worsens anxiety. Calm, confident presence from you is helpful. Do not over-reassure either — excessive coddling can reinforce the fear response. Desensitisation through recorded storm sounds at low volume, very gradually increased over weeks, can help in mild cases.
Calming Aids
- Pressure wraps (anxiety vests) — provide gentle, constant pressure similar to swaddling. Effective in 30–40% of dogs.
- Pheromone diffusers — Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats — synthetic pheromones that signal safety.
- Calming supplements — certain amino acid and herbal combinations have evidence behind them.
Veterinary Medication
For moderate to severe noise phobia, medication is often necessary and humane. We prescribe appropriate anxiolytic medications depending on your pet's size, age, and health status. These are given before anticipated noise events (Diwali, New Year's Eve, monsoon season).
Do not give human sedatives (diazepam, alprazolam) without veterinary prescription and guidance. Incorrect dosing can cause respiratory depression and paradoxical agitation.
Preparing for Diwali
Start planning two weeks before Diwali. Talk to us about appropriate medication at your next visit. Keep pets indoors with music playing to mask outdoor sounds. Ensure all identification tags and microchipping are up to date — Diwali is the peak season for lost pets in India.
