Bright Red Blood (Hematochezia)
This usually indicates bleeding lower in the digestive tract — the colon or rectum. Common causes include colitis, straining from constipation, parasites, or anal gland issues. It's often less immediately dangerous than dark stool, but still needs veterinary evaluation, especially if it recurs.
Dark, Tarry Stool (Melena)
This indicates digested blood, meaning the bleeding is higher up — the stomach or small intestine. Possible causes include ulcers, certain medications, ingested toxins, or more serious internal conditions. Dark tarry stool should be treated with more urgency than bright red blood.
