A dog bite wound often looks far less serious on the surface than it actually is — the visible puncture is frequently the smallest part of the injury.

Why Bite Wounds Deceive

Dog teeth cause crushing and tearing injury beneath the skin that a small surface puncture doesn't reveal. Damage to underlying muscle, or infection introduced deep into tissue, can be present even when the visible wound looks minor.

Infection Risk

A dog's mouth carries bacteria that can cause serious infection if introduced under the skin. Wounds that aren't properly cleaned and, when necessary, treated with antibiotics can develop abscesses or spreading infection days later.

What to Do Immediately

Gently clean the wound if you can do so safely, control any active bleeding with light pressure, and get to a vet promptly rather than assuming a small wound will heal on its own.

What Your Vet Will Check

Beyond cleaning and treating the visible wound, your vet will assess for deeper tissue damage, may recommend antibiotics to prevent infection, and will advise on wound monitoring over the following days.

Frequently Asked Questions

The wound looks tiny — do I really need to bring my dog in?
Yes — the surface size of a bite wound often has little relation to the damage underneath.

How soon after a bite can infection develop?
Infection can develop within a day or two, sometimes presenting as swelling, warmth, or discharge at the site.

Should I bandage the wound myself first?
Light, clean pressure to control bleeding is fine, but let your vet assess and properly clean and dress the wound rather than sealing it yourself.

Does this apply to bites from other animals too?
Yes — cat bites in particular carry a high infection risk due to their narrow, deep puncture wounds, and should also be evaluated promptly.
