Dogs can't tell you they feel feverish, and a warm nose isn't a reliable indicator — recognizing fever in dogs takes knowing the actual signs, not the old myths.

Signs of Fever in Dogs

Lethargy, reduced appetite, shivering, warm ears and body, red or glassy-looking eyes, and reduced interest in usual activities are common signs. A warm, dry nose is not a reliable fever indicator on its own.

Taking Temperature Accurately

The only reliable way to confirm fever is a proper rectal temperature reading with a pet-appropriate thermometer. Guessing from touch alone is unreliable.

Common Causes

Infections (bacterial, viral, or from a wound), inflammation, recent vaccination (mild, short-lived fever is possible), and, less commonly, immune-mediated conditions can all cause fever.

When to See a Vet

A fever lasting more than a day, a very high reading, or fever accompanied by lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, or refusal to eat should prompt a veterinary visit rather than home monitoring alone. Never give human fever medication (like paracetamol or ibuprofen) to a dog — these can be toxic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a dry nose a reliable sign of fever?
No — nose temperature and moisture vary for many reasons unrelated to fever and shouldn't be used to judge your dog's temperature.

Can I give my dog paracetamol for a fever?
No — human fever medications can be toxic to dogs. Always consult your vet for appropriate treatment.

Is a mild fever after vaccination normal?
A brief, mild fever can occur after vaccination and typically resolves within a day; a fever that persists or is accompanied by other symptoms should be checked.

What's considered a genuine emergency fever?
A very high temperature, or fever combined with lethargy, vomiting, or collapse, should be treated as urgent rather than monitored at home.
