One Skipped Meal vs. a Pattern

A dog that skips one meal but remains playful, alert, and drinking normally is usually fine — stress, a minor stomach upset, or a hot day can all cause this. A dog that refuses food across multiple meals, or stops drinking water entirely, is a different situation.

💡 Dogs can go longer without food than without water. A dog that won't drink for 24 hours is at real risk of dehydration, which compounds whatever the underlying problem is. Not drinking is generally a stronger signal to act on than not eating alone.

What Might Be Behind It

Causes range from mild (dental pain, a recent vaccination, travel stress) to serious (infection, organ disease, gastrointestinal obstruction). Because the range is so wide, a physical exam — and sometimes bloodwork — is often the fastest way to actually know what's happening rather than guessing.

When to Bring Your Dog In

More than 24 hours without eating, any period without drinking water, or reduced appetite alongside vomiting, lethargy, or weight loss all warrant a veterinary visit rather than continued home monitoring.
