Neutering refers to the surgical removal of reproductive organs — castration for males (bucks) and spaying for females (does). For rabbits, it is one of the most important health decisions you can make as a pet owner. At Shivraj Pet Clinic & Lab, we have safely performed rabbit neutering for pet parents across Pimple Nilakh, Baner, Aundh, and Wakad.
Why Should You Neuter Your Rabbit?
Prevents reproductive cancers — Uterine cancer affects over 80% of unspayed female rabbits by age 5. Spaying completely eliminates this risk.
Reduces aggression and territorial behaviour — Unneutered rabbits often bite, lunge, grunt, and spray urine to mark territory. Neutering dramatically reduces these behaviours in both males and females.
Allows safe bonding between rabbits — A neutered male and spayed female can live together harmoniously without risk of pregnancy.
Improves hygiene — Neutered rabbits spray urine far less, making their living space cleaner and easier to maintain.
Longer, healthier life — Studies consistently show neutered rabbits live significantly longer than intact ones. Removal of reproductive organs eliminates associated diseases.
Common Myths About Rabbit Neutering
"They are too small for surgery" — Not true. We have safely neutered rabbits weighing as little as 1.2 kg. The key is appropriate anaesthesia and surgical technique, not size.
"It changes their personality" — Neutering actually makes rabbits calmer and more affectionate. Their core personality remains intact.
"Rabbits recover too slowly" — Rabbits typically return to normal activity within 48–72 hours when proper pain management and post-operative care protocols are followed.
How We Perform Rabbit Neutering at Shivraj Pet Clinic
- Pre-surgical examination and bloodwork — We assess your rabbit's health before anaesthesia
- Gaseous anaesthesia — Essential for small exotics; far safer than injectable-only anaesthesia
- Sterile surgical environment — Full surgical suite with appropriate monitoring
- Pain management — Post-operative analgesia for comfortable recovery
- Follow-up appointment within 7 days — To check healing and remove sutures if needed
When Is the Right Age?
Males can be castrated from 3.5 to 4 months of age, once the testicles have fully descended. Females are ideally spayed between 5 and 6 months. Surgery in older rabbits carries slightly higher risk due to fatty tissue around the reproductive organs, but is still routinely performed with appropriate pre-operative screening.
